Topic: Introduction to Technical Drawing

Objectives & Outcomes

• To understand the basic principles of technical drawing and the methods used to create technical drawings.
• To be able to create simple technical drawings using lines, geometric shapes, and dimensioning.

Materials

• Pencils (regular and #2 lead)
• Erasers
• Paper (regular weight, 8.5" x 11")
• Technical drawing template (optional)

Warm-up

• Have students look around the classroom and identify objects that have clearly defined edges, corners, and surfaces. Have them name these surfaces, edges, and corners.
• Next, have students look around the classroom and identify objects that have complex shapes. Have them name these shapes.

Direct Instruction

• Introduce the concept of technical drawing as a way of communicating information about the shape and size of objects.
• Demonstrate how to use a ruler to draw straight lines and how to use a triangle to draw right angles.
• Demonstrate how to use a protractor to draw angles.
• Explain how to use a T-square to ensure accurate alignment of lines and geometric shapes.
• Introduce the concept of dimensioning, explaining how to use units of measurement to describe the size of an object.

Guided Practice

• Have students work in pairs to practice using the tools and techniques introduced to correctly draw a geometric shape, such as a square or a circle.
• Have students apply what they have learned to correctly dimension a geometric shape, such as a square or a circle.

Independent Practice

• Ask students to choose a geometric shape to draw on their own, and then have them label and dimension the shape correctly.
• Encourage students to ask for help if they are struggling with any part of the process.

Closure

• Review the key points of the lesson, including the names of the different geometric shapes and how to properly label and dimension them.
• Ask students to share their completed drawings with the class, and discuss any challenges they faced and how they were able to overcome them.

Assessment

• Observe students during the guided practice activity to ensure they are accurately completing the drawings and accurately labeling and dimensioning the geometric shapes.
• Collect and review the completed drawings from the guided practice activity to assess student understanding of the key concepts learned in the lesson.
