Topic: Fashion design aesthetic and philosophy

Objectives & Outcomes:

• Students will understand the importance of aesthetics and philosophy in fashion design.
• Students will be able to identify and use inspiration from various sources in creating their own designs.

Materials

• Examples of fashion designs or collections
• Basic drawing tools (pencils, erasers, etc.)
• Handouts with examples of inspiration sources (e.g. art, architecture, nature, etc.)

Warm-up

• Begin the lesson by asking students what they know about fashion and fashion designers.
• Write their responses on the board and discuss as a class.
• Ask students what draws them to certain fashion designs or styles and what makes them interested in a particular fashion designer.

Direct Instruction

• Next, introduce the concept of fashion design as the creation of clothing or accessory designs that are intended to be worn by the fashion industry.
• Discuss the importance of aesthetics, or the visual qualities of a design, in the creation of fashion designs.
• Discuss the importance of philosophy in the creation of fashion designs. Ask students to brainstorm what types of philosophies or beliefs a fashion designer might have that might influence their designs.

Guided Practice

• Divide students into small groups and provide each group with a set of images of fashion designs from a variety of different designers.
• Have students work together to analyze the aesthetics, philosophy, and inspiration of each designer's work.

Independent Practice

• Have students choose a specific area of focus within the field of fashion design (e.g. sportswear, luxury, couture).
• Have students research the history and aesthetics of their chosen focus, and create a project that showcases their understanding of the field's aesthetics and philosophy. This could be a presentation, a portfolio, or another format of the student's choice.

Closure

• Have students reflect on the process of creating their project, and discuss any insights or discoveries they made while researching their focus.
• As a class, discuss the importance of aesthetics and philosophy in fashion design, and how they influence and inspire fashion designers.

Assessment

• Observe students during the research and sketching stages to assess their understanding of their chosen topic and the process of creating a fashion design.
• Evaluate the completed fashion designs to assess students' understanding of aesthetics and philosophy in fashion design, and their ability to apply this understanding to their design.
