Materials

  • hand shovels or post-hole diggers
  • markers or flags for marking the positions of the holes
  • crops requiring holes (e.g. tomatoes, potatoes, sweet potatoes, onion, garlic)

Warm-up

  • Review the different crops that need to be planted in holes and their requirements ( e.g. depth of the holes, distance between the holes, etc.)

Activity 1

  • Have the students work in pairs to dig a hole according to the requirements of the crop they are planting. After they finish digging the hole, they should discuss and review any problems or challenges they encountered while digging the hole.
