Materials

  • Graphic novel (such as "The Arrival" by Shaun Tan)
  • Storyboard template (provided by teacher)
  • Pencils
  • Erasers

Warm-up

  • Review the purpose of dialogue in storytelling. Dialogue helps us understand the characters and their relationships with each other. It also helps us understand the setting and the events of the story.
  • Ask students to brainstorm examples of dialogue from their favorite books or movies. Write the examples on the board.
  • Ask students to share their favorite dialogue from the examples on the board.

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the concept of dialogue writing. Explain that dialogue shows the characters' thoughts and feelings through their words.
  • Read a graphic novel to the class and pause at key points to discuss the dialogue. Ask students to pay attention to the purpose of the dialogue and how it reveals character, setting, and events.
  • Model how to write dialogue by hand-copying a page of the graphic novel with the dialogue highlighted. Show students how to indent the dialogue and how to use quotation marks to show who is speaking.
  • Provide students with graphic novels and pencils. Have them copy a page of dialogue and write about how the dialogue reveals the character, setting, and events.

Guided Practice

  • Divide students into small groups and give each group a graphic novel to read. Have them identify key points in the graphic novel to focus on and write dialogue for the key points.
  • Have each group present their dialogue to the class and discuss how the dialogue reveals character, setting, and events.

Independent Practice

  • Give students a different graphic novel to read and have them write dialogue for key points on their own.
  • Have students share their dialogue with a partner and discuss how the dialogue reveals character, setting, and events.

Closure

  • Have students reflect on the importance of dialogue in graphic novels and how it can help create a more immersive and engaging reading experience.
  • Ask students to share any insights or discoveries they made about the importance of dialogue in graphic novels.

Assessment

  • Collect and review students' written work to assess their understanding of the importance of dialogue in graphic novels.
