Topic: YOU AND THE LAW

Objectives & Outcomes

  • To understand the importance of the law in society and how it shapes our daily lives.

Materials

  • Copies of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms
  • Handouts with examples of laws and legal situations in daily life
  • Surveys or other assessment tools (optional)

Warm-up

  • Ask students what they know about the law and legal system in Canada. Write their answers on the board.
  • Discuss the importance of laws in society and how they protect our rights and freedoms.

Direct Instruction

  • Distribute the handouts with basic information about the law and legal system in Canada.
  • Go over the information in a guided discussion, making sure to address any questions or misconceptions that students may have.
  • Outline the different types of law and legal systems in Canada, including federal, provincial, and territorial law, and common law and civil law.
  • Discuss the importance of legal professionals such as lawyers and judges in the legal system.

Guided Practice

  • Have students work in small groups to research a specific area of law (e.g. criminal law, family law, constitutional law).
  • Provide each group with a specific topic to research (e.g. arrest procedures, divorce procedures) and have them create a presentation on their topic using powerpoint or another presentation software.
  • During their presentations, encourage students to explain the basics of the law they are discussing, as well as its purpose and significance in the legal system.

Independent Practice

  • Assign students a project that requires them to apply the principles they have learned in their class to a real-life situation. This could be a research project on a specific law, a mock trial, or a case study.
  • Encourage students to be creative and think outside the box when coming up with their projects.

Closure

  • Review the main points of the unit and ask students to reflect on what they have learned.
  • Ask students to share their projects with the class and discuss how they applied the law to their projects.

Assessment

  • Observe students during the guided and independent practice activities to assess their understanding of the law and how it applies to different situations.
  • Evaluate students' projects based on their use of the law in their chosen field, their ability to research and document their findings, and the overall quality of their presentation.
