  • Students will be able to recognize the importance of compassion and friendship in times of struggle.

Materials

  • Copies of the 1999 animated movie The Iron Giant
  • Writing materials (pen and paper)

Warm-up

  • Begin the lesson by showing a short clip from the 1999 animated movie The Iron Giant. Ask the students to pay attention to the characters and the setting. Who are the characters and what is the setting of the movie?

Direct Instruction

  • After the warm-up, provide the students with a brief overview of the plot of the movie, including the main character, the Iron Giant. Explain that the Iron Giant is a giant robot from outer space that accidentally crashes on Earth and is discovered by a young boy named Hogarth. Hogarth and his mother take the robot in and try to hide him from the rest of the world, as people are frightened of anything that is different.
  • Ask the students to think about the themes and concepts in the movie, and write their ideas on the whiteboard or chart paper. Possible themes include acceptance of others, standing up for what is right, and the importance of friendship.

Guided Practice

  • Divide the students into small groups and assign each group a specific theme. Have the students work together to create a short skit or role play that demonstrates their theme. Encourage the students to use their imaginations and think creatively to come up with an interesting scene.
  • Allow the students to present their skits to the class, and provide feedback and comments on how well they were able to convey the theme.

Independent practice

  • Have the students choose a theme related to the Iron Giant that they would like to explore in more detail. Encourage them to think about how they can creatively convey their theme through art, writing, or another medium.
  • Allow the students to work independently or in small groups to create a project that demonstrates their theme. Encourage the students to use their creativity and imagination to come up with a unique and engaging project.

Closure

  • Have the students share their projects with the class. Encourage the rest of the students to ask questions and discuss their projects with their peers.

Assessment

  • Assess the students' understanding of the topic by having them complete a quiz or short answer questions about the Iron Giant. You could also have the students write a short essay about their favorite part of the movie or about why they liked or disliked a particular character.
