Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to understand the risks, causes, and symptoms of hypertension and how to manage it.

Materials

  • Handouts with information about hypertension
  • Blood pressure monitors
  • Armbands for monitoring pulse rate
  • Graphing paper and markers

Warm-up

  • Ask students if they have heard of hypertension before. What do they know about it?
  • Write the word "hypertension" on the board and have students take turns coming up and writing a word or phrase that they think it might mean.
  • Once all the ideas have been written down, go through them and discuss the meanings.

Direct Introduction

  • Begin by explaining that hypertension is a medical condition in which the blood pressure is elevated.
  • Discuss the factors that can contribute to hypertension, such as age, gender, and family history.
  • Show the students the blood pressure cuff and explain how it is used to measure blood pressure.
