Topic: Getting on with family members

Objectives & Outcomes

  • By the end of this lesson, students will be able to understand the importance of getting along with family members and develop the skills needed to do so.

Materials

  • Divided class into groups of three or four
  • Handout with scenarios about family conflicts (#1-#6)
  • Index cards and pens for each group

Warm-up

  • Ask students to share their experiences with family conflicts and how they were resolved.
  • Encourage students to be honest and share raw feelings without fear of judgement.
  • After a few students share, ask the class if they see any patterns in the types of conflicts that occur and the ways they are resolved.

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the topic of getting along with family members and the importance of this in Chinese culture.
  • Discuss the different types of conflicts that can arise between family members, such as personality differences, differing expectations, and disagreements over decisions.
  • Explain the importance of approaching family conflicts with a positive and respectful attitude, and the benefits of trying to understand the other person's point of view.
  • Provide some practical tips for resolving conflicts, such as brainstorming solutions together, asking for help from a third party, and making a commitment to compromise.

Guided Practice

  • Divide the class into small groups and give each group a scenario involving a conflict between family members.
  • Have the groups discuss and come up with a solution for the scenario, using the practical tips provided.
  • Have each group present their solution to the class and discuss the different strategies they used.

Independent Practice

  • Ask each student to choose a family member with whom they frequently have a conflict and write a letter to that family member explaining the conflict and offering practical tips on how to get along better.
  • Have the students share their letters with the class and discuss the different strategies that were offered.

Closure

  • Review the importance of getting along with family members and discuss any additional strategies that the students came up with during the independent practice.
  • End the lesson by reminding the students that conflict is natural and can even be beneficial in some cases, but that it is important to resolve conflicts in a respectful and constructive manner.

Assessment

  • Observe the students during the group discussion and take note of their participation and understanding of the topic.
  • Review the skits and posters created during the independent practice and evaluate their understanding of the importance of getting along with family members.
