Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to identify and articulate the needs and responsibilities of various family members within a family unit.

Materials

  • Charts or posters with examples of needs and responsibilities (e.g. food, shelter, physical and emotional care, financial support)
  • Images of different family types (e.g. nuclear, extended, single-parent, same-sex)

Warm-up

  • Ask students to share what they know about family needs and responsibilities.
  • Write their responses on the board or on a chart.

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the concept of family needs and responsibilities. Explain that these are the things that a family needs to function and the responsibilities that family members have to meet those needs.
  • Use examples to illustrate the different needs and responsibilities in a family. For example, a family needs a place to live and food to eat, and family members have responsibilities such as paying the rent or mortgage and shopping for food.
  • Ask students to brainstorm additional needs and responsibilities for a typical family. Write their responses on the board or on a separate chart.

Guided Practice

  • Give students a handout with examples of needs and responsibilities for a typical family. Have them work in small groups to brainstorm additional needs and responsibilities not listed on the handout.
  • As a class, discuss the additional needs and responsibilities that were brainstormed by the groups.

Independent Practice

  • Ask students to individually choose a family member (e.g., parent, child, grandparent) and research that person's needs and responsibilities. Have them write a brief report outlining their findings.

Closure

  • Review the key points of the lesson and ask students to share any insights or observations they made about their chosen family member's needs and responsibilities.

  • Observe students during the independent practice activity and provide feedback on their presentations.
  • Collect and grade the family tree diagrams.
  • Evaluate students' participation in small group discussions and their ability to argue a point of view during the debate. -Administer a quiz or written assessment to gauge students' understanding of the concepts covered in the lesson.
