Topic: ''Egyptian River Valley Civilization''

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to explain the key features and characteristics of the Egyptian River Valley civilization and its contributions to ancient civilization.

Materials

• Handouts with information about the Egyptian River Valley civilization
• Maps of the Egyptian River Valley
• Pictures or artifacts from the Egyptian River Valley civilization

Warm-up

• Ask students if they have ever heard of the Egyptian River Valley civilization. Ask them to explain what they know about it.
• Show them a map of the Egyptian River Valley and point out the major cities, Nile River, and major sources of water and food.

Direct Instruction

• Explain that the Egyptian River Valley civilization developed along the Nile River, which provided a reliable source of water and food for the people living there.
• Discuss the geography of the Egyptian River Valley and the effects that it had on the development of the civilization.
• Explain how the Nile River and the annual flooding of the valley played a key role in the development of the civilization.

Guided Practice

• Divide the class into small groups and give each group a map of the Egyptian River Valley.
• Have the students use the map to locate the Nile River and the major cities that developed along it.
• Have the students discuss the effects of the geography of the valley on the development of the Egyptian River Valley civilization.
• Bring the class back together and have a class discussion about the effects of the geography of the valley on the development of the civilization.

Independent Practice

• Have the students draw a map of the Egyptian River Valley civilization, including the Nile River, the major cities, and any other features they included in their discussion.
• Have the students label the map with the names of the cities and other features.
• Have the students present their maps to the class and explain their choices for the placement of the cities and other features.

Closure

• Review the key points of the lesson, namely the location of the Egyptian River Valley civilization relative to the rest of the world, the major cities and features of the civilization, and the reasons for the decline of the civilization.
• Ask the students to discuss how their understanding of the Egyptian River Valley civilization has changed since the beginning of the lesson.
• Encourage the students to reflect on the importance of geography in understanding historical events.

Assessment

• Observe the students during the group work activity and take notes on their participation and understanding of the material.
• Collect and grade the worksheets completed during the independent practice activity.
• Administer a final written test to assess the students' understanding of the Egyptian River Valley civilization and its location in the world.
