Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to identify the role of social media in communication and understand how it can be used to convey messages to a broader audience.

Materials

• Computer with internet access
• Social media platform examples (e.g. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram)

Warm-up

• Ask students to share their experiences with social media and its role in their communication with peers, family, and friends.
• Discuss the benefits and drawbacks of using social media for communication.

Direct Instruction

• Introduce the concept of social media and its various platforms, such as Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat.
• Discuss the potential risks and benefits of using social media for communication, including privacy concerns, digital bullying, and the potential for misinterpretation of messages and images.
• Provide students with handouts with tips for safely and responsibly using social media.

Guided Practice

• Divide students into small groups and have them discuss the ways in which they currently use social media for communication.
• Have each group share their experiences with the class and discuss potential strategies for improving their communication through social media.

Independent Practice

• For their project, have students create a poster or presentation that includes three strategies they could use to improve their communication through social media.
