Topic: protein synthesis

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will understand the process of protein synthesis, including transcription, translation, and hydolization.

Materials

• Diagrams or videos of the steps of protein synthesis
• Handout with definitions and examples of key terms (transcription, translation, mRNA, rna, protein)

Warm-up

• Ask students if they have ever heard of the term "protein synthesis." Ask them to explain what it is and how it happens.
• Display a diagram or video of the steps of protein synthesis and ask students to label the different steps.

Direct Instruction

• Review the steps of protein synthesis with the class, using the diagram or video as a reference.
• Explain the importance of each step in the process, and provide examples of how each step contributes to the final product, protein.
• Ask students to take notes on the material covered.

Guided Practice

• Divide the class into small groups and assign each group a step of protein synthesis to focus on.
• Provide each group with a handout with relevant vocabulary terms and definitions, as well as examples of how each step of protein synthesis is carried out in the body.
• Have students work together to complete a graphic organizer, using the provided examples to illustrate how the specific step of protein synthesis works in the body.

Independent Practice

• Have students work individually or in pairs to create a multi-media presentation on protein synthesis.
• Students can choose to focus on one specific step of protein synthesis, or they can produce a more general overview of the process as a whole.
• Project options could include a written report, a visual presentation such as a power point or Prezi, or a physical model of protein synthesis.

Closure

• Have students share their presentations with the class, providing opportunities for practice and feedback.
• As a class, review the key points covered in the lesson and discuss any questions or concerns that remain.

Assessment

• Formative assessment can be done through observation and checking the students understanding through asking questions and listening to the answers.
• Summative assessment can be done through an evaluation of the students ability to demonstrate an understanding of the key concepts through a written or oral exam, a project, a quiz, or a worksheet.
