Topic: Immunity

Objectives & Outcomes

• Understand the functions of the immune system and its components.

Materials:

• Diagrams of the immune system
• Handouts with definitions and descriptions of the different components of the immune system
• Example scenarios of how the immune system fights off various infections and diseases

Warm-up

• Ask the students if they have ever had a cold or any other kind of infection.
• Ask them to share their experiences and how they felt during the illness.
• Explain that the body can sometimes fight off foreign invaders such as bacteria, viruses, and parasites through the immune system.

Direct Instruction

• Introduce the concept of the immune system and explain its functions.
• Discuss the different types of immunity, such as innate and acquired.
• Explain how the innate immunity is the body's natural ability to fight off infection, and how the acquired immunity is the body's ability to develop antibodies against a specific invader after being exposed to it.

Guided Practice

• Have students work in pairs to complete a worksheet on the immune system.
• Go over the answers as a class and discuss any questions.

Independent Practice

• Have students research how the immune system works in more detail using the school library or online resources.
• Have students create a presentation or poster on their findings, and present to the class.

Closure

• Review the main points of the lesson and have students reflect on what they have learned about the immune system.
• Ask students to think about how the immune system protects us from disease and how we can support our own immune system by eating well and staying healthy.

Assessment

• Observe students during the guided and independent practice activities to assess their understanding of the material.
• Collect and review their research projects to assess their ability to apply their knowledge of the immune system to a real-world situation.
