First Aid Response To Allergic Reactions Lesson Plan for 10th Grade Students

Topic: First Aid Response to Allergic Reactions

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Upon completion of this lesson, students will be able to identify the signs and symptoms of an allergic reaction, and be able to provide proper first aid treatment for a person experiencing an allergic reaction.

Materials

  • Flash cards with pictures of various allergic reactions (e.g. hives, itching, swelling, breathing difficulties, dizziness, nausea, etc.)
  • Pen and paper for students to take notes
  • First aid kit including epinephrine pen, anti-histamine tablets, anti-diahrrtic tablets, sterile gauze, band-aids, and clean water

Warm-Up

  • Begin the lesson by showing the students a slide show of various allergic reactions and ask them to identify the signs and symptoms they see in each photo.
  • After the slide show, ask the students to share any personal experiences they have had with allergies and allergic reactions.

Direct Instruction

  • Next, explain to the students that an allergic reaction is a result of the body's immune system erroneously reacting to a foreign substance (such as food, medication, insect venom, or pollen) as if it were harmful.
  • Discuss the various types of allergic reactions and the substances that cause them, such as anaphylaxis and angioedema, and provide examples of each.
  • Explain the signs and symptoms of an allergic reaction, including skin rash, hives, itching, difficulty breathing, and nausea.
  • Discuss the appropriate first aid response to an allergic reaction, including calling for emergency medical help and administering epinephrine if available.

Guided Practice

  • Divide the class into small groups and provide each group with a copy of a hypothetical scenario involving a student experiencing an allergic reaction.
  • Have the students discuss the appropriate first aid response to the scenario and how they would implement it.
  • Allow the groups to share their responses with the class and discuss as a group.
  • Note: The hypothetical scenarios can be adapted to cover different types of allergic reactions and substances that cause them.

Independent Practice

  • Provide each student with a copy of a hypothetical scenario involving a student experiencing an allergic reaction.
  • Have the students write a first aid response plan for the scenario and then discuss their plan with a partner.
  • Have the students present their first aid response plans to the class.

Closure

  • Review the key points of the lesson, including the signs and symptoms of an allergic reaction, the proper first aid response, and how to summon emergency help.
  • Ask the students to share something they learned about allergic reactions during the lesson.

Assessment

  • Observe the students as they practice administering first aid to a person experiencing an allergic reaction.
  • Evaluate the students' participation in small group discussions and their understanding of the key points of the lesson.
  • Ask the students to explain the proper first aid response to an allergic reaction in writing.
