10th Grade Circulation Of Blood Lesson Plan (Science)

Topic: Describe the pumping mechanism of the heart

Objectives & Outcomes

  • understand the structure and function of the heart as a pump
  • explain the role of the heart's valves in blood circulation

Materials

  • Diagrams or models of the heart and blood vessels
  • Balloon or rubber band
  • Water or colored liquid

Warm-up

  • Show the students the diagrams or models of the heart and blood vessels and ask them to describe what they see.
  • Ask the students if they have heard of the heart before and what they know about it.
  • Ask the students to make a list of the things they would like to learn about the heart today.

Direct Instruction

  • Explain that the heart is a muscular organ that pumps blood throughout the body.
  • Show the students the diagrams or models of the heart and blood vessels again and point out the four chambers of the heart (left and right atrium and left and right ventricle).
  • Explain that blood enters the heart through the superior and inferior venae cavae, which are large veins that carry blood back to the heart from the body.
  • Show the students the model of the heart and blood vessels and ask them to visualize the blood flowing into the heart.
  • Explain that the blood then passes through the atria, which are the upper chambers of the heart.
  • Explain that the atria contract to pump blood into the ventricles, which are the lower chambers of the heart.
  • Explain that the ventricles then contract to pump blood out of the heart and into the blood vessels that lead to the body.

Guided Practice

  • Have the students work in pairs or groups and give each group a set of heart templates or construction paper hearts.
  • Ask the students to use the templates to cut out five hearts, one for each chamber of the heart.
  • Have the students glue or tape the hearts in the correct position on a piece of paper, making sure that the atria are on the left side of the heart and the ventricles are on the right side of the heart.
  • Have the students label the atria, ventricles, and valves on their hearts.

Independent Practice

  • Have the students individually or in pairs take a piece of paper and draw a labeled diagram of the human heart, including the atria, ventricles, and valves.
  • Encourage the students to use the resources available to them (textbook pages, internet, etc.) to check their work and make any necessary corrections.

Closure

  • Have the students share their diagrams with the class and explain the functions of each part of the heart.
  • Review the key points of the lesson, including the function of each chamber of the heart and the mechanics of blood pumping.

Assessment

  • Observe the students during the guided and independent practice activities to assess their understanding of the material.
  • Collect the drawings and have the students explain their drawings and explanations to assess their understanding of the function of each part of the heart.
