Topic: Myths

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to analyze and interpret myths as a way of understanding the world and their place in it.

Materials

• List of common myths
• Examples of images from mythology
• Handout with the main points of each myth

Warm-up

• Ask students if they are familiar with any myths.
• Have students brainstorm a list of common myths, and write them on the board.
• Ask students to share any interesting or familiar myths they know.

Direct Instruction

• Define myth as a traditional story or legend that explains the origin of something or tells about a person or event that is not real.
• Introduce the list of myths that students brainstormed earlier.
• Ask students to share any additional myths they know, and add them to the list on the board.
• Discuss the different types of myths (e.g. creation myths, hero myths, trickster myths) and provide examples for each type.

Guided Practice

• Divide students into small groups.
• Give each group a set of myths and have them sort the myths into the appropriate category.
• Have each group present their sorted myths to the class and discuss the categories they used.
• Ask students to explain why they sorted the myths in the way they did.

Independent Practice

• Give each student a copy of a myth and have them write a short paragraph explaining the myth.
• Collect the paragraphs and display them on the classroom wall or projector for everyone to review.

Closure

• Have the students share their favorite myths and explain why they like them.
• Review the key concepts of myths and discuss how they can be used to convey important ideas and values.

Assessment

• Observe the students during their presentations and discussions to assess their understanding of myths and their ability to analyze their significance.
• Collect the students' written reports and assess their ability to analyze and synthesize information.
