Topic: Getting to know you and interesting fun facts about maths

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Introduce yourself and share an interesting fun fact about yourself
  • Learn about interesting fun facts about maths
  • Establish expectations from you to the learning environment

Materials:

  • Blank paper for taking notes
  • Pencils for taking notes
  • Calculator for math exercises

Warm-up

  • Ask students to share an interesting fact about themselves. Write their responses on the board. (e.g. I can juggle, I can solve a rubix cube in under a minute, I can do a handstand)
  • Discuss the interesting facts and ask students to make connections between them. (e.g. all of these have to do with physical skills)
  • Ask students to think of a math topic they are interested in and write their choice on a piece of paper.

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the topic of today's lesson (e.g. basic arithmetic operations) and explain its importance in our daily lives (e.g. calculating prices, making change).
  • Show examples of how to solve a problem using the topic (e.g. add 3+2=5, subtract 5-3=2) and ask students to try solving it themselves.
  • Explain any challenging concepts or terms and provide additional examples if needed.

Guided Practice

  • Provide students with a set of problems to solve using the taught concept and assist as needed.

Independent Practice

  • Provide students with a set of problems for them to solve independently without assistance.

Closure and Review

  • Review the objectives of the lesson and have students share their solutions to the independent practice problems.Additional Resources

Assessment

  • Observe students during the guided practice and independent practice activities to assess their understanding of the material.
  • Collect and grade the solutions to the independent practice problems as a form of assessment.
