Topic: Mean,Mode and median

Objectives & Outcomes

• To understand the concepts of mean, median and mode
• Apply the concepts of mean, median and mode in real-life situations

Materials

• Calculator
• Graph paper or computer software for graphing
• Examples of data (such as test scores, sales figures, etc.)

Warm-up

• Ask students if they have heard of the terms mean, median and mode before.
• Ask students to give examples of each concept.
• Review the differences between mean, median and mode.

Direct Instruction

• Write the definitions of mean, median and mode on the board.
• Explain that the mean is the average of a set of data, and that it is calculated by adding up all the data values and dividing by the number of data values.
• Explain that the median is the middle value of a set of data, and that it is often not unique (there may be multiple medians in a set of data).
• Explain that the mode is the most common data value in a set of data.
• Using examples, demonstrate how to calculate the mean, median and mode for a given set of data.

Guided Practice

• Give students a set of data and have them work in pairs to calculate the mean, median and mode.
• Allow time for students to discuss their answers with their partners and check their work.

Independent Practice

• Give students a new set of data and have them calculate the mean, median and mode on their own.
• Encourage them to use their calculators to help them with the calculations.

Closure

• Review the definitions of mean, median and mode.
• Ask students to share any interesting or surprising results they found while calculating the mean, median and mode on their own.

Assessment:

• Students will be assessed on their ability to accurately calculate a mean, median and mode on a given set of data.
• Students will be assessed on their ability to explain the definitions and uses of mean, median and mode.
