Topic:Pythagoras Theorem

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to use pythagoras theorem to find the length of a side of a right angled triangle.

Materials

• Whiteboard and markers
• Examples of right angled triangles
• Calculators (optional)

Warm-up

• Ask students to name two features of a right angled triangle.
• Write their answers on the board.
• Explain that the two features they mentioned are part of a theorem that can be used to find the length of a side of a right angled triangle.

Direct Instruction

• Write the following on the board:

`a^2 = b^2 + c^2`

• Explain that this is the pythagoras theorem, which states that the squared length of the hypotenuse (the side opposite the right angle) is equal to the sum of the squared lengths of the other two sides.
• Demonstrate how to use the pythagoras theorem to find the length of a side of a right angled triangle.
• Use a piece of string and a ruler to find the length of the side opposite the right angle.
• Use the pythagoras theorem to find the length of the other two sides.
• Ask students to work out a few examples on their own, using the pythagoras theorem to find the length of the sides of a right angled triangle.

Guided Practice

• Pass out a worksheet with some problems for students to work on.
• Explain the problems and provide guidance as needed.
• Have students work in pairs or small groups to solve the problems.
• Assist as needed.

Independent Practice

• Have students choose a real-life application for pythagoras theorem and create a project using that application.
• Projects can be in the form of a poster, a presentation, or a written report.
• Have students present their projects to the class.

Closure:

• Review the steps of pythagoras theorem and its applications in real-life.
• Ask students to share their favorite part of the lesson and why.

Assessment:

• Observe students during the guided practice and independent practice to ensure they are applying pythagoras theorem correctly and understanding the concept.
• Collect and grade the posters or skits as a formative assessment.
• Give a quiz at a later date to assess retention of the material.
