Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to find the length of a segment using the distance formula.
• Students will be able to find the midpoint of a segment and use the midpoint formula to solve real world problems.

Materials

• Calculator
• Graphic calculator or spreadsheet software (optional)

Warm-Up

• Ask the students if they have ever had to measure the distance between two points in the real world (e.g. distance from their house to the school, distance from their house to the park).
• Have the students brainstorm a list of possible tools they could use to measure the distance, such as a tape measure, a GPS, or a smartphone app.
• Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each tool.

Direct Instruction

• Introduce the concept of the distance formula and its relationship to the segments AC and AB.
