Point Of View In Narrative Writing Lesson Plan for 10th Grade Students

Topic: Point of View in Narrative Writing

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to understand the different points of view in narrative writing and how they can be used to convey different effects in a story.

Materials

  • Examples of narratives written from different points of view (first person, second person, third person - omniscient and limited)
  • Writers' workshop materials (e.g. pencils, paper, prompts)

Warm-up

  • Have students draw a diagonal line on a piece of paper, with one end labeled "First Person" and the other end labeled "Third Person - Omniscient."
  • Have students fold the paper in half so that the two ends meet, and then unfold it.
  • Ask them to think of a story they have recently read or watched that was written in one of the points of view on the fold, and to write down a few words describing what they remember about the story.
  • Have a few students share their thoughts with the class.

Direct Instruction

  • Review the definitions of first person, second person, third person, and third person omniscient.
  • Have students read and discuss a short text (such as a short story or excerpt from a longer work) that is written in one of the points of view.
  • As a class, identify which point of view the text is written in and discuss why this point of view was chosen.

Guided Practice

  • Divide the class into small groups.
  • Give each group a short text (such as a short story or excerpt from a longer work) that is written in one of the points of view.
  • Have the groups work together to identify which point of view the text is written in and discuss why this point of view was chosen.
  • Have each group present their findings to the class.

Independent Practice

  • Have students choose a topic and write a short story or short essay - with a Narrative - in one of the points of view.
  • Encourage students to share their stories or essays with the class and explain their choice of point of view.

Closure

  • Review the various points of view and their characteristics.
  • Ask students to summarize what they have learned about point of view in narrative writing.

Assessment

  • Evaluate students' narrative writing projects for their use of point of view and their effectiveness in achieving their intended meaning or message.
