  • Worksheets for students to fill out or write on for each section

Warm-Up

  • Begin the lesson by asking students to brainstorm a list of things that they know about the French Revolution. Write their responses on the board.
  • Next, ask students to think of a few things they know about the American Revolution. Write their responses on the board as well.
  • Next, ask students to think of a few things they know about the Industrial Age. Write their responses on the board as well.
  • Finally, ask students to look at the three lists on the board and see if they can find any commonalities or trends.

Direct Instruction

  • Begin by discussing the Enlightenment and its impact on society and thought during this time period. Explain that the Enlightenment was a movement that emphasized reason, individualism, and the importance of human dignity and freedom.
  • Next, discuss the revolutions in France and America and their impacts on society and thought. Discuss the various factors that contributed to these revolutions, including social, political, and economic factors.
  • Finally, discuss the Industrial Age and its impact on society and thought. Discuss the factors that led to the emergence of the Industrial Age, including the rise of technology and the shift from rural to urban living.

Guided Practice

  • Divide the class into small groups and give each group a primary source (e.g. a written work by a philosopher or writer from the Enlightenment period). Have the groups discuss the source and identify any themes or ideas that are present.
  • Have each group present their source and the themes/ideas that they found to the class.
