  • Next, display the map of Europe and briefly explain that during World War I, countries in Europe fought against each other over a period of several years.

Direct Instruction

  • Begin by explaining that World War I was a result of multiple factors, including nationalism, imperialism, and alliances.
  • Nationalism refers to a sense of pride and loyalty to one's country. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, nationalism was on the rise in Europe, leading to a tense and unstable climate.
  • Imperialism refers to the policy or practice of acquiring and maintaining control over foreign territories and their resources. At the time, many European countries were seeking to expand their empires, which also contributed to the instability and tensions in the region.
  • Alliances are agreements between countries to support each other in case of war. Prior to World War I, multiple alliances were formed in Europe, which added to the likelihood of conflict.
  • Next, discuss the events that led to the outbreak of war in 1914. These include the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, the Austro-Hungarian heir to the throne, in June 1914, the July crisis that followed, and Germany's declaration of war on Russia in August 1914.
  • Finally, explain the course of the war and its impact on the world. This includes the major battles, the involvement of other countries, and the resulting changes in the political and territorial makeup of Europe.

  • Have students create a visual representation of the key factors that caused World-War-I
  • Have each group present their visual to the class.
