Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to compare and contrast the religious beliefs, cultural practices, political systems, and technological advancements of Mesopotamian and Egyptian civilizations.
  • Students will be able to explain how the geography of Ancient India and China impacted the development of Asian civilizations.
  • Students will be able to describe the major achievements of Chinese and Indian societies during the period 500 BCE-500 CE.

Materials:

  • Copies of the handouts on Mesopotamian, Egyptian, Indian, and Chinese civilizations
  • Pen or pencil
  • Notebook or journal

Warm-up

  • Begin the class by asking students to share what they know about ancient civilizations. What are some examples they can think of?
  • Write their answers on the board and discuss as a class.

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the topic of ancient civilizations in Asia.
  • Discuss the geography of Asia and how it influenced the development of Asian civilizations.
  • Show maps or pictures of Ancient India and China and discuss the major rivers, mountains, and other physical features that influenced the development of these societies.
  • Discuss the major religions, cultures, and political systems of Ancient India and China.

  • Divide the class into small groups and assign each group one of the Asian civilizations to research.
  • Each group should have a research agenda that includes questions to guide their research and a list of sources to consult (e.g. textbooks, encyclopedias, online resources).
  • Have each group present their findings to the class.
  • Have students work in small groups to compare and contrast the religions, cultures, political systems, and technologies of the Asian civilizations they studied.
