La Edad Media Lesson Plan for 10th Grade Students

Topic: The birth of the novel in Spanish literature during the Medieval age.

Objectives & Outcomes

• Analyze the main characteristics of the novel in Spanish literature in the Medieval age.

Materials

• Copies of two or three novels from the Medieval age
• Handouts with the main characteristics of the novel
• Colored pencils or markers

Warm-up

• Ask the students if they know what a novel is and what makes it different from other literary genres.
• Have them make a list of the literary genres they are familiar with (poetry, drama, short story, etc.).
• Discuss the differences and similarities among the genres and how each one is suited for a certain purpose or theme.

Direct Instruction

• Introduce the concept of the Medieval Age and its main characteristics (e.g. feudalism, the Catholic Church's power and influence, the Reconquista).
• Explain how these factors influenced the development of Spanish literature during this period.
• Provide examples of works from the Medieval Age and discuss their main themes, characteristics, and characteristics.
• Emphasize the importance of understanding the context in which a piece of literature was written in order to fully appreciate its themes and messages.

Guided Practice

• Divide the class into small groups and provide each group with one or more examples of works from the Medieval Age.
• Have the groups analyze the works and discuss their main themes, characteristics, and messages.
• Encourage the groups to use the points discussed in the direct instruction portion of the lesson to aid in their analysis.
• Have each group present their findings to the class and discuss as a whole group.

Independent Practice

• Have students choose one or more works from the Medieval Age to study in more detail.
• Have students write a short report on the chosen work(s) that includes a brief summary, a discussion of the main themes, characteristics, and messages, and any personal impressions or thoughts on the work.

• Review the main characteristics and themes of Spanish Literature in the Medieval Age.
• Ask students to share any thoughts or impressions they have about the works they studied.
• Encourage students to continue reading and studying Spanish literature.

Assessment

• Observe students during independent practice to assess their understanding of the characteristics and themes of Spanish literature in the Medieval Age.
• Collect and review their presentations or writing for understanding of the characteristic and themes of the chosen work.
