Free 10th Grade Writing Research Introduction Lesson Plan

Topic:Writing research introduction

Objectives & Outcomes:

  • By the end of this lesson, students will be able to write a research introduction that is clear and concise, and that grabs the reader's attention.

Materials

  • Provide each student with a topic for their research project
  • Provide each student with a blank research introduction template (see example below)

Warm-up

  • Ask students to brainstorm possible topics for their research project. Write their suggestions on the board.
  • Ask students what they feel is important to include in a research introduction. Write their suggestions on the board.

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the concept of a research introduction, explaining that it is the first part of a research paper where the writer introduces the topic and lays the foundation for the research to follow.
  • Explain that a good research introduction should have the following elements:
  • A clear and concise statement of the research topic
  • A statement of the purpose of the research, including any questions that the writer aims to answer through the research
  • A brief overview of the research methodology, including any limitations or constraints
  • Provide examples of research introductions taken from published research articles, and ask students to identify the elements of the introduction.
  • Emphasize the importance of writing a well-structured and engaging introduction, as it sets the tone for the rest of the research paper and influences the reader's impression of the research.

Guided Practice

  • Divide the class into small groups and give each group a research topic.
  • Have each group brainstorm ideas for a research introduction for their assigned topic. Encourage them to include all of the elements discussed in the direct instruction.
  • Have each group present their introductions to the class, and provide feedback on their content and structure.
  • As a class, create a template for a well-structured research introduction, including examples of each of the elements discussed. Post the template on the class website for future reference.

Independent Practice

  • Have students choose a research topic of their own and write a research introduction for it. Encourage them to use the template created during the Guided Practice to ensure that their introductions are structurally sound.

Closure

  • As a class, review the key components of a research introduction and discuss the importance of writing clear, concise introductions in terms of communicating research findings to a broader audience.

Assessment

  • The teacher will assess students' introductions based on the components discussed in class, the use of relevant research, and the ability to clearly and concisely communicate the research topic to a broader audience.
