Writers Effect Lesson Plan for 10th Grade Students

Topic: Writers effect

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to identify the effects in a writer's work and explain how they are achieved.

Materials

• Short story or excerpt from a novel
• Handouts with examples of different effects (e.g. satire, symbolism, foreshadowing)

Warm-up

• Ask students to brainstorm a list of different types of writing, such as poetry, prose, plays, etc.
• Discuss the different types of writing and their main characteristics.

Direct Instruction

• Introduce the concept of a writer's effect and explain that it is the impact that a writer's style has on the reader.
• Provide examples of different types of effects, such as humor, suspense, or irony.
• Have students brainstorm a list of different writers and their corresponding effects.

Guided Practice

• Have students work in pairs to analyze a piece of writing and identify the effect that the writer was trying to create.
• Have each pair share their findings with the class and discuss any differences in their interpretations.

Independent Practice

• Have students choose a piece of writing that they have completed and analyze how they tried to create a specific effect in their writing.
• Have students create a presentation or report to share with the class on their chosen piece of writing and the effect they were trying to create.

Closure

• Review the different types of effects that writers try to create in their writing and how they can be used to create different emotional responses in the reader.
• Ask students to reflect on their own writing and think about ways they can try to create specific effects in their own writing.

Assessment:

• Observe students during the activity and during their independent practice to assess their understanding of the different effects and their ability to apply them in their own writing.
• Evaluate the students' independent practice to assess their ability to create specific effects in their own writing.
