Objectives & Outcomes

• Understand the difference between technical and operational definitions and how they are used in research
• Be able to provide examples of both types of definitions and how they are used in research

Materials

• Handout with definitions and examples of technical and operational definitions
• Examples of research articles using technical and operational definitions

Warm-up

• Ask students if they have ever seen or heard of technical or operational definitions before and if so, what they know about them.
• Write down any responses on the board and discuss as a class.

Direct Instruction

• Define technical and operational definitions.
• Explain that technical definitions are used to describe the characteristics and functions of a device or system, while operational definitions are used to describe how a device or system works.
• Provide examples of technical and operational definitions from research articles or textbooks.

Guided Practice

• Have students work in small groups to find and define technical and operational definitions in a research article or textbook.
• Have each group share their definitions with the class.
• As a class, discuss the differences and similarities between the technical and operational definitions found by the different groups.

Independent Practice

• Have students choose a topic of interest and find technical and operational definitions for that topic in at least three different sources, such as a research article, textbook, and industry website.
• Have students create a presentation in which they explain the differences and similarities between the technical and operational definitions they found and give examples of how they are used in practice.

Closure

• Review the importance of understanding the differences between technical and operational definitions and how they are used in research and industry.
• Ask students to share any insights or additional examples they gained from creating their presentations.

Assessment
