Free Grammatical Inversions For Esl Students Lesson Plan for 10th Grade Students

Topic: Grammatical Inversions for ESL students

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to use grammatical inversions not only, neither...nor, seldom, scarcely had, not until, under no circumstances in order to strengthen their arguments in a debate unit about whether AI language models should be used in their high school classrooms.

Materials

  • Topics for debate (e.g. Should AI language models be used in high school classrooms?)
  • Handouts with examples of grammatical inversions not only, neither...nor, seldom, scarcely had, not until, under no circumstances
  • Pen and paper for practicing sentence construction with grammatical inversions

Warm-up

  • Ask students to think of a topic that they feel strongly about. This can be anything related to the classroom (e.g. the use of technology in the classroom, the implementation of a new curriculum).
  • Have students write down their thoughts on a piece of paper.
  • Have a few volunteers share their thoughts with the class.
  • Ask the rest of the class to raise their hand if they agree with the thoughts expressed.
  • Ask the rest of the class to raise their hand if they disagree with the thoughts expressed.
  • Discuss the importance of being able to put forward a persuasive argument in a persuasive speech or debate.

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the concept of grammatical inversions, and explain how they can be used to strengthen arguments.
  • Use examples of grammatical inversions to demonstrate their function (e.g. not only X, but also Y; neither X nor Y; scarcely had X when Y; under no circumstances will X).
  • Explain how to use these inversions in a debate, and give some practical examples (e.g. not only is this approach effective, but also it will save time and money; neither is this approach effective, nor will it save time or money).

Guided Practice

  • Divide students into pairs or small groups and give them a short debate topic related to AI language models.
  • Have students brainstorm arguments for and against the topic, and write them down on chart paper or a shared document.
  • Have students use the grammatical inversions they learned to strengthen their arguments.
  • Encourage students to challenge each other's arguments and defend their own.

Independent Practice

  • Have students choose a topic they are interested in and do some research on it.
  • Have students create a short presentation or a written argument using the grammatical inversions they learned.
  • Encourage students to challenge each other's arguments and defend their own.

Closure

  • Have students reflect on the importance of using grammatical inversions in debates and how it can strengthen their arguments.
  • Review the grammatical inversions that were covered in the lesson.

Assessment

  • Observe students during the independent practice activity and provide feedback on their use of grammatical inversions in their paragraphs.
  • Collect and grade the paragraphs written during the independent practice activity.
