Topic: giving and responding to opinion

Objectives & Outcomes

• By the end of this lesson, students will be able to give and respond to opinion in a conversation.

Materials

• Task cards with opinion statements
• Whiteboard and markers

Warm-up

• Ask students to share their opinions about a specific topic or issue. For example, "What is your opinion about school uniforms?"
• Write down their responses on the whiteboard, and ask students to cluster them into yes and no answers.
• Finally, have a quick discussion about the pros and cons of school uniforms.

Direct Instruction

• Introduce the concept of giving and responding to opinions.
• Explain that an opinion is a belief or view about a subject, and that it can be positive or negative.
• Discuss the importance of giving and receiving respectful opinions.
• Explain the structure of an opinion sentence, including the subject, verb, and opinion word (such as "I think" or "I believe").
• Demonstrate how to give and respond to an opinion, using the warm-up activity as a model.

Guided Practice

• Have students work in pairs or small groups to give and respond to opinions on a given subject (such as a current event or a fictional character).
• Monitor the activity and offer assistance as needed.

Independent Practice

• For the independent practice activity, have students choose a subject and write a short essay giving their opinion on it.
• Encourage students to include examples and/or reasons to support their opinion.

Closure

• Ask students to share their essays with the class and discuss any differing opinions.
• Ask students to reflect on the importance of giving and responding to opinions as well as the strategies they used in the activity.

Assessment

• Assess students' essays for their ability to give and respond to opinions.
• Assess students' participation in the class discussions and group activities.
