Expressing Happiness Lesson Plan for 10th Grade Example Students

Topic: Expressing Happiness in English

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to express happiness in English.

Materials

• Images of people expressing happiness (e.g. smiling, hugging, etc.)
• Pen and paper for each student
• Computer with internet connection for research (optional)

Warm-up

• Ask the students to think of a time when they were happy. Ask them to write down the event and describe what happened.
• Have a small class discussion about the events and the feelings of happiness that were expressed.

Direct Instruction

• Distribute the handouts with expressions of happiness.
• Have a class discussion about the different expressions and their meanings.
• Have the students practice using the expressions in various situations, such as in a conversation or in a written text.

Guided Practice

• Divide the class into small groups and give each group a set of situation cards.
• Have the students work together to create a short conversation or written text using the expressions from the handouts.
• Have the groups present their conversations or texts to the class and have the class provide feedback and additional expressions.

Independent Practice

• Have the students choose one emotion that they would like to focus on expressing in English.
• Have the students create a short conversation or written text expressing this emotion using the expressions from the handouts.
• Have the students present their conversations or texts to the class and have the class provide feedback and additional expressions.

Closure

• Review the expressions for expressing emotions and have the students give examples of how they would use each one.
• Have the students summarize what they have learned about expressing emotions in English.

Assessment

• Observe the students during the project and take note of their ability to effectively use the expressions for expressing emotions.
• Have the students complete a written assessment where they are asked to use at least 3 different expressions for expressing emotions in a short paragraph.
