Objectives & Outcomes

Materials

Warm-up

  • Ask students to share an experience in which they were certain about something (e.g. a test result, their future plans, etc.). Have them share how they expressed their certainty.
  • Next, have them think of an experience in which they were not certain about something. Have them share how they expressed their uncertainty.

Direct Instruction

  • Distribute the handouts with examples of expressions of certainty and uncertainty.
  • Review the examples as a class, asking students to explain the meaning of each expression.
  • Emphasize the importance of understanding how to express certainty and uncertainty in English.

Guided Practice

  • Divide the class into small groups.
  • Give each group a set of scenarios involving uncertain situations (e.g. "If I drop my phone in the water...").
