Topic: Expressing certainty & Uncertainty

Objectives & Outcomes

• To be able to express certainty and uncertainty in English by using words such as definitely, probably, maybe, certainly, probably not, unlikely, etc.

Materials

• Classroom whiteboard and markers
• The text below as a guide (modified to suit the lesson's needs)

Warm-up

• Ask students to share an experience in which they were certain about something (e.g. a test result, their future plans, etc.). Have them share how they expressed their certainty.
• Next, have them think of an experience in which they were not certain about something. Have them share how they expressed their uncertainty.

Direct Instruction

• Distribute the handouts with examples of expressions of certainty and uncertainty.
• Review the examples as a class, asking students to explain the meaning of each expression.
• Emphasize the importance of understanding how to express certainty and uncertainty in English.

Guided Practice

• Divide the class into small groups.
• Give each group a set of scenarios involving uncertain situations (e.g. "If I drop my phone in the water...").
• Have the groups discuss the scenarios and come up with appropriate expressions of certainty or uncertainty for each scenario.
• Have each group present their scenarios and expressions to the class.

Independent Practice

• Have students choose one of the scenarios presented by their group and write a short dialogue using the expressions of certainty and uncertainty they came up with.
• Encourage students to use context and body language to convey the uncertainty being expressed.

Closure

• As a class, review the expressions of certainty and uncertainty and how they are used in English.
• Ask students to share one thing they learned about expressing certainty and uncertainty in English.

Assessment

• Look for students to use the expressions of certainty and uncertainty correctly in their presentations and participation in class discussion.
• Reflect on the students' understanding of the expressions of certainty and uncertainty by asking them to explain the meaning of each expression and how they are used in English.
