Topic: Vaping and it's effect on youth

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to identify and analyse the different argument devices used in the article.
  • Students will be able to summarise the key points of the article and construct a well-supported analysis of the article.

Materials

  • Article on vaping and it's effect on youth
  • Markers or pens
  • Paper

Warm-up

  • Ask students to think about a recent news article they have read on a topic that interests them.
  • Have them work in pairs to discuss the following questions:
  • What was the main topic of the article?
  • How did the writer try to convince you of their point of view?
  • Did the message in the article have any impact on you? Why or why not?

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the concept of argument and argumentation, and provide examples of different types of arguments (e.g. persuasive, deductive, inductive).
  • Discuss the importance of understanding how arguments are constructed and how to identify the various devices used to build them (e.g. appeals to emotion, statistics, evidence).
  • Show the students the article they will be analysing, and ask them to identify the main argument the writer is trying to make.
  • Discuss the different devices the writer uses to build their argument, and how they contribute to their overall message.

Guided Practice

  • Provide the students with a different article on a similar topic and ask them to identify the main argument and the devices used to build it.
  • Have the students work in pairs to examine the article and discuss the main argument and devices used to build it.
  • Have the students present their findings to the class and discuss as a group.

Independent Practice

  • Have the students choose a different article on a similar topic and analyse it using the techniques and concepts discussed in class.
  • Have the students write a short essay (2-3 pages) outlining the main argument of the article and how it is built using specific examples from the text.
  • Encourage the students to use specific quotes and paraphrases from the text to support their analysis.

Closure

  • Review the key points of the lesson and ask the students to share any insights or questions they have on the topic of analyzing argument.
  • Remind the students of the importance of analyzing arguments in order to properly understand a text and to be able to form our own opinions.

Assessment

  • Observe the students during the guided and independent practice to assess their understanding of the key points and techniques for analyzing argumentation.
  • Collect and grade the students' written analyses for understanding of the argument and use of annotation and devices to support their analysis.
