10th Grade Business Sectors Lesson Plan

Topic: Business sectors

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to explain the different business sectors and the characteristics of each.

Materials

• Chart with the different business sectors (e.g. retail, manufacturing, banking, etc.) listed on it
• Handout with info about each business sector (e.g. retail: sales of goods or services to final consumers; manufacturing: production of goods from raw materials)

Warm-up

• Ask students if they are familiar with the different business sectors. Have them name some of them.
• Explain that business sectors are ways of classifying businesses based on what they do and what they produce.

Direct Instruction

• Show the chart with the different business sectors and discuss each one in turn.
• Discuss the characteristics of each sector, such as the products and services they produce, the types of companies that operate in them, and the characteristics of the customers they serve.
• Use examples to illustrate each sector.

Guided Practice:

• Have students work in pairs or small groups to research and report on one particular business sector.
• Provide guidance and assistance as needed.
• Encourage students to use the characteristics discussed during the direct instruction to help them identify and research their chosen sector.
• Have each group present their findings to the class.

Independent Practice:

• Have students choose one business sector to research in depth.
• Have them write a report on the sector, including information on its characteristics, how it operates, and how it contributes to the economy overall.

Closure

• Have students share their reports with the class.
• Ask them to discuss the importance of each sector to the economy and how each sector differs from the others.

Assessment

• Observe students during the independent practice and make note of their participation and understanding of the material.
• Collect and grade their reports as a form of assessment.
